Our University Hosts Training Session to Enhance International Communication Skills in Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture

To improve students’ cross-cultural communication abilities and support the global promotion of Anhui Province’s traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sector, our university held an English proficiency training session for TCM-related communication on the evening of December 9. Pan Yinxing, a faculty member from the School of Humanities and International Education Exchange, delivered a practical and engaging English presentation workshop for international exchange volunteers, core members of the university student union, and student guides from the School of Pharmacy.

The training was conducted in an all-English, interactive format. Leveraging his extensive experience in cross-cultural communication, Pan provided an in-depth yet accessible overview of strategies for promoting TCM culture on the international stage. Through numerous real-world examples, he emphasized the importance of considering the cultural backgrounds and cognitive frameworks of international audiences when introducing TCM. He underscored the necessity of translating complex TCM knowledge into vivid, everyday language that resonates with listeners. For example, when explaining traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, it is advisable to begin with familiar items from daily life and use concrete, relatable examples to illustrate abstract pharmacological principles—while avoiding overly technical or obscure jargon. This “lifestyle-oriented and scenario-based” communication approach not only enhances comprehension among foreign audiences but also effectively sparks their interest in TCM culture.

Participants noted that the training was rich in content and highly practical, offering valuable guidance for their future involvement in international TCM cultural outreach. Through the session, students gained a clearer understanding of how to introduce TCM in English with clarity, accuracy, and persuasive impact—thereby helping more people overseas learn about and appreciate the unique appeal of TCM culture.
